Charleston, Savannah, the Sea Islands, and Beyond
In forty drawings, artist and textile designer Melissa Conroy (daughter of Pat Conroy) turns her talent to the landscape of her childhood: the South Carolina Lowcountry.
Conroy takes readers on a road less traveled, to pockets of the region they might not find on their own. She includes the familiar terrain of Charleston and Savannah, but she also takes us into the forest where the ruins of Old Sheldon Church stand, ancient and crumbling among the greenery; and to the seashore, where shrimp boats find anchorage and the vanishing islands are home to sharks, alligators, monkeys, and egrets, but also to houses on stilts, half torn away from the tides and time. She also introduces local history and folklore, whether it’s in the Haint Blue Houses, painted a bright shade to keep away bad spirits, or the Waving Girl of Savannah statue, a tribute to the child who would wave to all of the ships that sailed from the harbor.
As an added bonus, Conroy created a technique where her drawings can be placed in a four-square pattern, to create one larger piece of art. So, four 8 x 8 drawings can be removed from the book and framed together to form a larger portrait measuring 16 x1 6.
This is the perfect keepsake for locals to the area and a memento (and travel guide!) for visitors to Charleston, Savannah, and anywhere in the Lowcountry.
